Unlike its smaller cousin 1500, that is part of the “big three”, 2016 Ram 2500 will never be produced, let alone sold in great quantities. This heavy duty truck has its own, special market segments which require its impeccable performance. Extreme towing rates and sturdiness are what 2500 HD pickup offers and it always had its customer base that needs these features.
Just like its smaller counterpart, new 2500 pickup is offered in no less than 10 trim levels. It can be ordered with base 5.7L Hemi V-8 unit or optional 6.4L Hemi V-8 and 6.7L turbo diesel flat-six Cummins engines. Latest in the lineup is, surprisingly the leader in towing rates as entry-level Tradesman grade approaches 18,000 pound figure. Cummins turbo diesel inline-six makes 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque with 6-speed manual transmission, while optional automatic gearbox allows it to generate as much as 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. Needless to say, all versions can be ordered with either rear or all-wheel drive. Base engine delivers 383 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque which are sent to the ground via 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 6.4L Hemi V-8 mill produces 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, but mostly comes with more sophisticated, Power Wagon models (Tradesman, base and Laramie). They usually tow around 10,000 pounds and offer the same 6-speed automatic transmission.
2016 Ram 2500 Specs
Design-wise, 2500 HD trucks are slightly beefier than their 1500 full-size cousins. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same. They also share cross grille frontal fascia and three available cab configurations. However, it rides on larger 17 or 18-inch, specially made wheels and gets either Regular, Crew or Mega cab configurations with latest being extended Crew cab. This way you will be able to choose the best option for you in all segments, depending on what you need.
Interior is also pretty much carried over, even though largest models offer slightly more space than those with Regular cab. Heavy, angular dashboard is still here, and large instrument panel doesn’t really differ as well. Middle tunnel can offer no less than three cup holders and plenty of space for couple of elbows. The 8.4-inch full color touch screen display is dubbed as largest in class, and does all infotainment duties including audio controlling and navigation. Luxury is not something for what the 2016 Ram 2500 is bought but even the base version of this truck can offer more than decent features.
Advanced safety systems are slightly different than in regular lineup. New model gets park view rear back up camera system and cargo-view camera. Apart from that, Ram’s heavy duty truck lineup doesn’t really get anything other than mandatory safety systems like hill-start assist, stability control, anti-lock brakes and an airbag system. One of the things that we really like and many drivers that are towing large loads will certainly need is the Smart Diesel Exhaust Brake that will significantly reduce speeds when going downhill and this way you will be able to expend brake life.
Being as big as it is, and offering all these thirsty, large engines, this truck doesn’t really offer fine-looking fuel efficiency figures. After all, no truck was ever able to compete with other segments anyway. Whichever engine you choose, expect combined ratings in very low teens. HD truck’s prices are generally higher than those of regular full-size and stand in the range between $30,000 for 2WD Tradesman and $60,000 for 4WD Laramie Limited models. This vehicle remains one of the best ways to carry or tow enormous amounts of cargo. This heavy duty truck offers abundance of power thanks to its batch of V-8’s, but also requires a lot of refills when it comes to fuel.
Release date has not been official but pretty much all details about the 2016 Ram 2500 are known so expect it to be delivered to the market in the next few months after the introduction. Without a doubt this is one of the most powerful options on the market and you will be getting figures that are among the top in many segments.
